Immigrants in America/Canada?
I want to find out whether Canadians/Americans view their country as a “melting pot” (a place where immigrants of different cultures or races form an integrated society) or a cultural mosaic (diverse cultures in one society that do not blend together).
If you are having trouble understanding what I mean, here’s the definition from Wikipedia:
Cultural mosaic is a term used to describe the mix of ethnic groups, languages and cultures that co-exist within Canadian society. The idea of a cultural mosaic is intended to champion an ideal of multiculturalism, differently from other systems like the melting pot, which is often used to describe the neighboring United States’ ideal of assimilation.
So… What do YOU think?
This is for a Sociology research project by the way. I need to know what society thinks. =)
My grandparents came from Lebanon, a good example of what a “cultural mosaic” can do to a country. I view the U.S. as a melting pot, or as some might call it, a “stew”. Some aspects of culture such as some foods survive generations and may even get adopted by mainstream society. But most immigrants need to adhere to the core values and traditions of the dominant society or there simply won’t be an America. Our culture is based on fundamental values embodied in the Constitution and in our national character such as personal responsibility, achievement, the belief that man can master nature, and tolerance for others, not to mention, equality of women with men.
You’ll find that quite a few immigrants are racists (don’t want to mingle or intermarry with Americans), intolerant, and subjugate women. Just this week, a Muslim father apparently ran down his young daughter because her teacher shook hands with her and her father. Daddy took the hand shake as an assault on family honor.
